PED works directly with business, education and government partners to build the foundation and advance the efforts of all residents, private and corporate, in the City of Portsmouth.
PED does this by focusing on the advancement of strategic opportunities, by fostering the growth of within our target industries, preparing our residents for opportunities in those industries, and aligning our MWDBE businesses with as many opportunities to partner with larger organizations.
The team works daily to attract and retain business. Tactically speaking, this includes activities such as economic research and analysis, strategic planning and analysis, public policy assistance, business retention outreach, outreach marketing, contract negotiation, incentive management and negotiation, site selection, and much more. It all boils down to building and maintaining good rapport with current and future Portsmouth businesses. As Director Moore says, “Everything we do is about relationships.”
The PED team is a department of the city, but is unique in a number of ways. PED reports up to the City Manager, but also works in conjunction with two managing boards, the Economic Development Authority (EDA) and the Portsmouth Port & Industrial Commission (PPIC), for a number of initiatives.
